Word & Character Counter
Count words, characters, and sentences as you type
Counts words, characters, characters without spaces, and sentences in your text as you type — no button to click, the numbers update live.
How it works
Every keystroke recalculates all four counts directly in your browser: words are counted as whitespace-separated chunks, characters count every character including spaces, and sentences are counted by splitting on runs of text ending in ./!/? — none of it involves a server, so there's no delay waiting for a response.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No — the counting happens entirely in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab discards the text with nothing kept anywhere else.
Why does a single word with no punctuation still count as 1 sentence?
Sentence counting looks for text ending in a period, exclamation point, or question mark. Text with none of those — a title, a fragment, or something you're still typing — still counts as one sentence rather than zero, since there's clearly some content there.
Does it count numbers or symbols as words?
Yes — anything separated by whitespace counts as one word, whether it's a real word, a number, or a symbol on its own.
What counts as a character?
Every character in the text, including spaces and punctuation, for the "characters" count. The "characters (no spaces)" count removes only whitespace, keeping punctuation.
Is there a text length limit?
No hard limit — it's just a textarea and some counting logic, so it handles anything from a single word to a full document.
